Resultant strain in a bimetallic strip

The bimetallic strip is constructed by using two different metals with different thermal expansion coefficients. As a result, the individual metals will undergo different strain and the resultant strain produced needs to be calculated for calculating the stresses experienced by the individual metals.

The metal which has less thermal expansion coefficient will undergo tension and the metal which has higher thermal expansion coefficient will undergo compression.
